From the reaction of our audience, I believe wholeheartedly that they understood the major achievement that was happening on our stage.
The Penguin Project began with the compassion and imagination of Dr. Andrew Morgan—a pediatrician and lifelong theater lover who believed every child deserved a moment in the spotlight. He saw how the magic of the performing arts could lift children with disabilities, helping them build confidence, make friends, and find their voice.
What started as a small, single local production soon revealed something beautiful: children who once hesitated to speak or sing were now stepping into lead roles with pride and joy. With the gentle guidance of peer mentors, these young artists discovered strengths they—and sometimes even their families—never knew they had. Parents watched with full hearts as their children blossomed in ways they had only hoped for.
Today, that single spark of inspiration has grown into a warm, nationwide community. Across the country, Penguin Project chapters continue to prove one simple truth: when you give a child the chance to shine, they light up the world.
Meet Dr. Andrew “Andy” Morgan—the heartbeat of The Penguin Project. As our founder and CEO, he brought together two of his greatest passions: medicine and musical theater. A Professor Emeritus of Clinical Pediatrics and longtime champion for children with developmental disabilities, Dr. Morgan has been a guiding light for over 35 years.
Even after retiring from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, he hasn’t slowed down—consulting with schools and orgs, and continuing his work as an educator, advocate, and community voice. His deep love for community theater (over 30 years as a director and performer!) gave life to an idea: what if children with disabilities had their moment in the spotlight? And just like that, The Penguin Project was born—and has been soaring ever since.
